United States of America

United States of America: 89 ecoregions. Each with its climate now and toward 2050, and its conservation tier.

Landscape and climate

Eighty-nine ecoregions touch the United States, more than almost any other country, spanning three realms and nearly every biome on the roster: tundra and boreal taiga in Alaska, temperate broadleaf forest across the East and Great Lakes, temperate conifer forest along the Pacific slope and the Rockies, temperate grasslands from tallgrass prairie to shortgrass steppe, Mediterranean chaparral in California, the Chihuahuan, Sonoran, and Mojave deserts plus the Great Basin shrub steppe, Everglades flooded grasslands, mangroves, and tropical moist and dry forest in Hawai'i. For gardeners this means almost nothing generalizes nationally: a plant proven in the New England-Acadian forests says little about the Sonoran desert or Puget lowland forests. Many prairie and eastern forest ecoregions carry the Nature Imperiled tier, which makes regionally native planting a genuine contribution, not a gesture. Start from your specific ecoregion, not the country.
