State or province
Virginia
Virginia, United States of America: 6 ecoregions. Each with its climate now and toward 2050, and its conservation tier.
Landscape and climate
Six ecoregions reach Virginia, running the full width of the state. The Mid-Atlantic US coastal savannas and Northeastern Coastal Forests cover tidewater, the Southeast US conifer savannas reach the southeast, the Piedmont holds the middle, and the west rises through the Appalachian-Blue Ridge forests into the Appalachian mixed mesophytic forests. Four are in the Nature Imperiled tier. Virginia covers coastal marsh to high Appalachian ridge in roughly three hundred miles, which is why local advice varies so much across it. Tidewater gardens contend with salt and a high water table; Piedmont gardens with red clay; mountain gardens with a shorter season and the richest native understory in the state.
