Idaho fescue is the plant that the small blue mound in every garden centre is imitating. That mound is almost always Festuca glauca, a European ornamental that dies out in the centre and wants replacing every few years; Idaho fescue is the western North American original, a densely clumping, long-lived perennial bunchgrass with the same fine blue to grey-green foliage on a plant roughly three times the size and with a genuine ecological job. It is a cool-season grass, flowering April to July on stiff stalks that stand about twice the height of the leaf tuft, and it is built underground rather than sideways: thick, deeply penetrating roots carrying symbiotic mycorrhizae, and no rhizomes at all. That is the whole difference between this grass and red fescue, the creeping lawn species in this same group. Idaho fescue never knits into turf, never repairs a gap by running, and cannot be mown as a lawn. What it does instead is hold a slope. The Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center calls it drought tolerant and excellent for erosion control, and notes the trap in the same breath: seedlings are only weakly competitive, and only mature plants become strongly competitive. Add that its seed is commercially available but not highly germinable, and the honest summary of establishment is that this is a two-to-three-year project on a weedy site, not a one-season fix. And its documented ground is western: rocky slopes and dry openings in woods, from British Columbia and Alberta south through the mountains to central California and Colorado. Nothing cited here describes how it behaves in a humid eastern summer, so this record does not guess.

A tough, fine-textured warm-season bunchgrass of the North American shortgrass prairie, named for its distinctive seed spikes that hang from one side of the arching stem like a comb or an eyebrow. Bluish-gray summer foliage forms dense low clumps that turn golden brown - sometimes orange and red - in autumn, while reddish-purple flowers rise above on slender culms in summer. Exceptionally drought- and heat-tolerant once established, it is a larval host for several prairie skipper butterflies and a seed source for granivorous birds.

Dwarf fothergilla (Fothergilla gardenii), also called dwarf witch alder, is a compact, slow-growing deciduous shrub of the southeastern US coastal plain, native from North Carolina south through South Carolina and Georgia to Alabama and the Florida panhandle. It earns its place for two clear seasons of interest. In spring, before or just as the leaves unfold, it carries short, fragrant, bottlebrush-like spikes of tiny petal-less flowers, and the whole white show comes from a dense mass of stamens rather than from any petals. In autumn the tidy blue-green leaves colour up in a mix of yellow, orange, and red, often several of those tones on one plant at once. It is a well-behaved small native shrub, usually staying around 2 to 3 feet high and about as wide, that wants an acidic, humus-rich, evenly moist but well-drained soil and full sun to part shade. In the wild it grows in wet pine savannas, pocosins, and bog margins, so it dislikes hot, dry, or limy ground and can spread slowly into a colony by root suckers.

A bold, moisture-loving native perennial of eastern North America that dies back to a woody base each winter and returns to throw up stout 2 to 6 feet stems topped with enormous 4-8 inch saucer-shaped flowers - white, pink, red, or burgundy, each with a contrasting central eye - from June into September. NC State Extension describes a herbaceous perennial hardy across USDA zones 4a-9b that thrives in wet to constantly moist soils, tolerates heat, humidity, and even brief flooding, and draws hummingbirds, butterflies, and other pollinators. The tropical-looking dinner-plate blooms make it a dramatic focal point for rain gardens, pond edges, and the back of a sunny border.
