Aesculus flava
Yellow buckeye (Aesculus flava) is the largest American buckeye, the pale-flowering tree of rich eastern woods, river bottoms, and Appalachian coves. It is a real shade tree, not a small ornamental: in a garden it commonly reaches 40 to 60 feet tall with a broad rounded crown, and old trees can be taller. In spring, upright clusters of creamy yellow to greenish-white flowers arrive with the large palmate leaves; by late summer the tree carries pear-shaped husks around the familiar glossy brown buckeyes. Give it the rich, consistently moist, well-drained soil of its native habitat and room to become a canopy tree. Its decisive limitation is exposure: dry ground and wind scorch the leaves, so it is much better at a sheltered woodland edge or in a deep, moisture-retentive lawn than on a hot, open street.
