State or province
North Dakota
North Dakota, United States of America: 3 ecoregions. Each with its climate now and toward 2050, and its conservation tier.
Landscape and climate
Three ecoregions reach North Dakota and all three are temperate grasslands, savannas and shrublands. The Northern Shortgrass prairie covers the drier west, the Northern Tallgrass prairie the wetter Red River valley in the east, and the Canadian Aspen forests and parklands reach the north-central part of the state. Two of the three are in the Nature Imperiled tier. The east-west rainfall gradient is the whole design brief here: tallgrass species suit the Red River side, shortgrass and mixed-grass species the west, and the aspen parkland adds scattered tree cover in between. Wind and winter are the other constants, and the deep-rooted prairie natives handle both better than anything brought in.
