State or province
Indiana
Indiana, United States of America: 3 ecoregions. Each with its climate now and toward 2050, and its conservation tier.
Landscape and climate
Three ecoregions reach Indiana and two are in the Nature Imperiled tier. The Central US forest-grasslands transition covers the west, the Southern Great Lakes forests the north, and the Interior Plateau US Hardwood Forests the south. The state therefore sits on a seam: prairie and savanna influence on one side, closed eastern hardwood forest on the other, and the transition between them running through the middle rather than along a clean edge. For planting, that seam is an advantage. Both a prairie planting and a woodland understory have genuine claim to being native here, and the honest question is which one your particular corner of the state was, which the ecoregion links below will answer better than the state line does.
