Grand fir (Abies grandis) is one of the great trees of the Pacific Northwest and a poor choice for most gardens, and those are the same fact rather than two: it is built for cool, wet, deep-soiled maritime ground and it is built enormous. Missouri Botanical Garden gives it 100 to 250 feet with a 4 to 6 foot trunk, says it performs poorly in most areas of the eastern United States, and states flatly that it is not recommended for planting south of USDA Zone 6. It is also fast - the coastal form can put on more than 5 feet a year while young - so the mistake compounds quickly, and it is not a durable tree in return: historically it reached nearly 300 years, but 100 is more typical under modern stress. Its bark is thin and it cannot seal a wound with pitch, so fire scars, pruning cuts and logging damage open the trunk to heart rot, and east of the Cascades a trunk carrying Indian paint fungus is rotten inside whether or not the crown looks it. Balsam woolly adelgid, bark beetles, root rot and needle rust are all on Missouri Botanical Garden's problem list, and western spruce budworm epidemics killed grand fir at scale in the eastern Cascades and the Blue Mountains in the late twentieth century. What is genuinely wonderful about it belongs on the label too. The needles are flat, blunt and laid in two neat horizontal ranks like the teeth of a comb, and along one side of a twig they alternate short, long, short - a sawtooth that white fir rarely shows and the quickest way to name the tree. Crushed, they smell strongly of tangerine, which is why it is also called stinking fir, and no other fir in this group smells like it. The cones stand UPRIGHT on the upper branches and never fall whole; they break apart on the tree in autumn and leave a bare spike standing on the branch, which is the single cleanest way to separate any Abies from a spruce or a pine.

Red spruce
Red spruce (Picea rubens) is the best-documented case of a tree damaged by air pollution anywhere in the world, and that is the honest headline rather than anything horticultural. Through the 1970s and 1980s, high-elevation stands across the Adirondacks, the Green Mountains and the central and southern Appalachians lost roughly a quarter to a half of their canopy trees. The mechanism took twenty years to pin down and turned out to be indirect: acid fog and mist leach calcium out of the needle cell membranes, and decades of acid deposition strip exchangeable calcium out of already-poor soils while mobilising aluminium that is toxic to fine roots. A calcium-starved needle loses cold tolerance, so the tree is killed not by the acid but by an ordinary winter it should have survived. The controlled proof came from Hubbard Brook in New Hampshire, where a watershed refertilised with calcium silicate in 1999 lost roughly a third as much current-year foliage as the untreated reference watershed in the severe winter-injury year of 2003, the reference losing about 75 per cent of it. The ending is genuinely good news, which is rare in this catalog: after the 1990 Clean Air Act Amendments cut utility sulphur dioxide by around forty per cent, more than three-quarters of monitored red spruce have been growing faster since about 2001. The second thing to know is that this is the tonewood - the Adirondack spruce of pre-war Martin guitars, still the premium soundboard for steel-string guitars, violin bellies and piano boards, and priced accordingly after mid-century overcutting. The third thing is the caveat the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center states flatly: this species is not well suited to cultivation. It wants cool foggy montane summers, permanently moist acid ground and no lime, its roots sit in the top foot of soil so it blows over, and it is often defoliated by spruce budworm. Plant it because you are restoring an Appalachian or northeastern spruce forest, not because you want a garden conifer.

Rocky Mountain juniper (Juniperus scopulorum) is the western counterpart to eastern redcedar, and the two are confused constantly - with good reason, because where their ranges meet across the Great Plains they hybridise freely and intermediate trees are genuinely hard to name. Start with the caveat: Missouri Botanical Garden has no species-level page for it at all, only cultivar entries, and the species is the wrong plant for a hot humid climate. The Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center is blunt about it - drought and salt spray are fine, high humidity and high night temperatures are not - so this is a plant for the dry interior west and the plains, not the Southeast. What it offers there is unusual. It is a narrow, slow, drought-hard tree of dry rocky foothills, 30 to 50 feet on a good site and often far less, with shredding red-brown bark, blue-grey scale foliage, and high tolerance of caliche and limestone - the mirror image of the acid-soil hollies in this batch. It is dioecious like them, so the waxy blue-black cones appear only on female trees with a male nearby, and those cones are cones rather than fruit, taking about 18 months to ripen. It also lives an extraordinarily long time: the Jardine Juniper in Utah is over 1,500 years old and a New Mexico specimen counted 1,888 rings. The hard restriction is cedar-apple rust, for which it is an alternate host - do not plant it near an orchard.

Two honest caveats before the good news. First, almost nothing sold as Siberian iris is this species: several hundred registered cultivars stand between the buyer and the wild plant, a great many of them hybrids with Iris sanguinea rather than Iris sibirica at all, so a garden centre label is a series name more than a binomial. Second, it is slow and it does not want your help. The Royal Horticultural Society gives two to five years to ultimate height, and the standing advice is to avoid dividing a clump unless the centre has actually died out - the opposite of the reflex most gardeners apply to perennials. There is also a quiet irony worth stating: a plant this common in gardens is Extinct in the Wild in Slovakia, Vulnerable in the Czech Republic, Hungary and Ukraine, and rare and endangered in Poland, because the wet hay meadows it belongs to have been drained. Now the good news, which is most of the record. This is the low-drama iris of the group. It is beardless, with a thin creeping rhizome about a centimetre thick rather than the fat surface knuckle of a bearded iris, and it is planted BURIED - rhizome tops 1 to 2 inches under the soil, exactly the depth that would rot Iris pallida. It wants ordinary good garden soil that stays moist through spring and early summer and is merely ordinary by August, so unlike Iris pseudacorus and Iris virginica in this wave it is not a water plant and will not thank you for a pond margin. Its narrow ribbed grassy foliage stays clean and upright all season where bearded-iris fans go rusty by July, it never needs staking, it is long-lived and clump-forming, and it carries far less of the iris borer burden that defines rhizomatous iris culture in eastern North America. If you want one iris out of this group and you want it to behave, this is the one.

Subalpine fir
Subalpine fir (Abies lasiocarpa) is the narrowest conifer in western North America and, for most gardens, the wrong tree. It is a timberline species: the US Forest Service silvical account puts its climate at a mean July temperature of 45 to 60°F, with more than 24 inches of precipitation of which much falls as snow, on ground that is frozen or under snow for a large part of the year. Bring it down the mountain into a hot summer, a humid one, or a polluted one and it sulks, thins and dies, and it does so slowly enough that people keep watering it. The Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center calls it a spire-like evergreen of 30 to 50 feet with stiff horizontal limbs branched to the ground, and that spire is the whole ornamental argument - a crown so narrow it can be a fifth as wide as it is tall, which is a snow-shedding adaptation rather than a nursery selection. At and above treeline it stops being a tree at all and grows as krummholz, low sprawling mats scoured by wind, and reproduces by LAYERING: a branch pressed into the ground roots and becomes a new stem, so a single tree can leave behind a ring of clones that mountaineers call an atoll. Two honest problems follow it down into cultivation. It is slow and, for a conifer, short-lived and structurally weak - thin bark, persistent dead branches, easily windthrown - and its pest list is serious: balsam woolly adelgid (Adelges piceae), introduced from Europe and the most destructive insect on this species in the Cascades, and the western balsam bark beetle (Dryocoetes confusus), which together with Armillaria root rot drives the mortality complex that has killed subalpine fir across large areas of the Rockies. Like every true fir it carries its cones UPRIGHT on the upper branches, dark purple ripening brown, and those cones never fall whole - they shatter on the tree and leave a bare central spike standing on the branch, which is the single quickest way to tell an Abies from a Picea at a glance.

The California Central Valley grasslands fill the long lowland between the Sierra Nevada to the east and the Coast Ranges to the west, spanning the Sacramento Valley in the north and the San Joaquin Valley in the south. The climate is Mediterranean, with most rain falling in winter and conditions growing drier from north to south and on the western, rain-shadowed side. Historically a mosaic of perennial bunchgrass prairie, oak savanna, vernal pools, and riparian woodland, the region is now largely converted to farmland and dominated by introduced annual grasses. Central US forest-grasslands transition
The Central US forest-grasslands transition is an ecotone stretching across the central Midwest-including Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin, Missouri, Iowa, and Kentucky-where the eastern deciduous forests of the United States give way to the tallgrass prairies of the eastern Great Plains. Its presettlement landscape was a mosaic of oak savanna, bluestem prairie, and oak-hickory and maple-basswood forest, with glacial moraines, dunes, fens, and marshes common in the Chicago Lake Plain along Lake Michigan. The climate ranges from humid warm continental to humid cold temperate. Now encompassing major metropolitan areas including Chicago and Milwaukee and reaching south toward St. Louis, the region has lost over 95% of its presettlement vegetation, with only about 3% protected.

Central-Southern US mixed grasslands
The Central-Southern US Mixed Grasslands run north to south from central Nebraska through Kansas and Oklahoma into north-central Texas, a vast prairie marking the ecological transition from tallgrass to shortgrass plains. Its flat-to-rolling, wind-deposited terrain (about 400-1,220 m elevation) carries native mixed-grass prairie of tallgrasses such as big bluestem and Indiangrass alongside shorter grasses, and OneEarth notes it holds the greatest floristic complexity of all North American grasslands. The climate is subhumid warm continental to warm temperate, with annual precipitation ranging from roughly 300 to 812 mm. Each spring more than 500,000 sandhill cranes (about 80% of the world's population) gather along Nebraska's Platte River, though only about 1% of the ecoregion is protected.
