A tiny, sociable nuthatch of long-needled western pines, tied closely enough to ponderosa pine that its range map largely follows the tree. It excavates nest cavities in dead pine wood, breeds cooperatively with helpers at the nest, and roosts communally through winter, with numbers of birds packing into one cavity and dropping into torpor on cold nights.
Conservation
Not globally threatened, but the birds depend on standing dead pine soft enough to excavate. Stands managed so that snags and large old pines are removed lose the nesting and winter-roosting cavities before they lose the trees.
