State or province
Oklahoma
Oklahoma, United States of America: 9 ecoregions. Each with its climate now and toward 2050, and its conservation tier.
Landscape and climate
Nine ecoregions reach Oklahoma, which is remarkable for a state of its size. It comes from sitting where the eastern forest, the southern plains and the southwestern dry country all meet. Five are grassland systems, including the Western shortgrass prairie in the panhandle, the Central Tallgrass prairie, the Flint Hills tallgrass prairie and the Cross-Timbers savanna-woodland. Four are forest: the Ozark Highlands mixed forests and Ozark Mountain forests in the northeast, the Piney Woods and East Central Texas forests in the southeast. Six of the nine are in the Nature Imperiled tier. Rainfall falls off sharply from southeast to northwest, and that gradient rather than the state line is what a planting plan should follow.
