Western shortgrass prairie
Western shortgrass prairie
The Western Shortgrass Prairie is the second-largest grassland ecoregion in North America, spanning the High Plains from Texas and New Mexico north to Nebraska and Wyoming. Its landscape is dominated by sod-forming perennial grasses such as blue grama and buffalograss, with mixed-prairie stands of needle-and-thread grass, western wheatgrass, and June grass. The climate is semi-arid, ranging from subhumid warm-temperate in the south to cold-temperate in the north, with annual precipitation of roughly 250-630 mm and recurrent late-summer droughts. Though under 1% is formally protected, about 56% of the habitat outside protected areas-almost all of it private land-remains essentially intact.

Use this as the broad planting pattern for the region: Temperate prairies, steppes, and pampas of grasses and forbs with few trees, under continental climates of hot summers and cold winters. Their deep, fertile soils have made them among the most extensively converted biomes for agriculture. For garden decisions, pair that context with the plant list below, then narrow by your site's light, water, soil, and mature-size constraints.

Planting collections
Finished planting recipes where every member can handle this region's climate range. The fit badge uses the collection's most sensitive plant, so a resilient collection is a safer starting point than any single standout.
