State or province
Colorado
Colorado, United States of America: 4 ecoregions. Each with its climate now and toward 2050, and its conservation tier.
Landscape and climate
Four ecoregions reach Colorado, and the line between them is the Front Range. East of it the Western shortgrass prairie runs to the state border, a temperate grassland system in the Nature Could Reach Half Protected tier. West and above sit the Colorado Rockies forests, and beyond them the Colorado Plateau shrublands and the Wyoming Basin shrub steppe, both desert and xeric shrubland ecoregions despite the altitude. That combination of dry air and real elevation is the thing to plan around. Prairie species handle the eastern plains well, montane conifers and their understory suit the mountains, and the western slope asks for plants that tolerate drought without the heat that usually comes with it.
