Lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta) is really three trees under one name, and choosing it without knowing which one you mean is the commonest mistake made about it. Inland, as var. latifolia, it is the tall, extraordinarily slender Rocky Mountain lodgepole that grows in dense even-aged stands after fire - straight enough that Indigenous peoples used it for tipi poles, which is where the common name comes from. On the Pacific coast, as var. contorta, it is a low, crooked, wind-sculpted shore pine of dunes and bogs that may never exceed thirty feet; the epithet contorta describes that form, not the inland one. In the Sierra Nevada it is var. murrayana, somewhere between the two. Across all of them the species shares a willingness to grow where other conifers will not - nutrient-poor sand, acid bog margins, even the hot mineral ground around geyser basins - and a fire ecology built on cones that stay sealed until heat opens them. It is also the tree at the centre of the mountain pine beetle epidemic that has killed lodgepole across tens of millions of acres of western North America since the late 1990s.

Boxelder (Acer negundo) is the maple that does not look like a maple. Instead of a single lobed leaf it carries compound leaves of three to five toothed leaflets, close enough to poison ivy that people regularly misidentify young shoots, and it is one of the very few dioecious maples - male and female flowers on separate trees, so only the females carry the familiar paired samaras. It is native across an extraordinary sweep of North America, from Maine to Manitoba and south to Florida, Texas and central Mexico, and it is genuinely at home on riverbanks and floodplains where its speed and flood tolerance are assets. In a garden it is usually a volunteer rather than a choice. It grows fast, breaks in storms, seeds everywhere, and hosts the boxelder bug, which overwinters on house walls in numbers that make it a household nuisance rather than a garden one. The case for it is narrow but real: it establishes on ground where better trees fail, in cold northern climates and on raw disturbed sites, and it is a documented larval host for cecropia and a valued early honey-bee forage.

Colorado blue spruce (Picea pungens) is a narrow, stiffly pyramidal conifer from the central and southern Rocky Mountains, and the source of nearly every silver-blue evergreen in cultivation. The colour is real and is the reason it is planted: the needles carry a waxy bloom that reads anywhere from grey-green to an almost metallic pale blue, sharpest on selected cultivars. In its native range, between roughly 6,000 and 11,000 feet from Wyoming and Idaho south to Arizona and New Mexico, it is a cool-climate mountain tree of moist stream sides and canyon bottoms. Planted far outside that range - which is where most people meet it - it is one of the most reliably disappointing conifers in the eastern United States, where humid summers bring on needle cast and cytospora canker and a fifteen-year-old specimen often loses its lower branches and never recovers them. It is also planted far too small: the nursery pyramid becomes a 30-to-60-foot tree. Given cool air, full sun, room, and honest expectations, it is superb and long-lived.

A tough, widely adaptable native shade tree of central and northeastern North America, growing 40 to 60 feet tall and wide with a rounded, spreading crown. Mature gray bark develops the warty corky ridges that make it instantly recognizable, and the round purple drupes are edible and feed dozens of bird species. One of the most pollution- and stress-tolerant street and shade trees available - it shrugs off wind, urban conditions, and wet, dry, or poor soils alike.

One of the largest and fastest-growing native hardwoods of eastern and central North America - a streambank and bottomland tree reaching 50 to 80 feet (occasionally far more) with a broad, open-rounded crown. Its glossy triangular (deltoid) leaves with coarse marginal teeth and flattened petioles flutter and clatter in the wind, and female trees release the cottony seed fluff that gives the tree its name. Fast, tough, and tolerant of drought and urban conditions, but messy and weak-wooded - Missouri Botanical Garden calls it generally inappropriate for ornamental or urban use, better suited to rural lowspots and stream corridors.
