Pennsylvania

Pennsylvania, United States of America: 7 ecoregions. Each with its climate now and toward 2050, and its conservation tier.

Landscape and climate

Seven ecoregions reach Pennsylvania and four are in the Nature Imperiled tier. The Appalachian mixed mesophytic forests and Allegheny Highlands forests cover much of the west and north, the Appalachian-Blue Ridge forests the south-central ridges, the Northeastern Hardwoods the northeast, the Southern Great Lakes forests the Erie corner, and the Northeastern Coastal Forests and Mid-Atlantic US coastal savannas reach the southeast around Philadelphia. All but one are temperate broadleaf and mixed forests, so Pennsylvania is genuinely a forest state throughout, with the variation coming from elevation and ridge-and-valley topography rather than from a change of biome. Oak, hickory and maple with a deep spring understory is the working model nearly everywhere in it.
