Missouri

Missouri, United States of America: 5 ecoregions. Each with its climate now and toward 2050, and its conservation tier.

Landscape and climate

Five ecoregions reach Missouri and four are in the Nature Imperiled tier. The Central US forest-grasslands transition and Central Tallgrass prairie cover the north and west, the Ozark Highlands mixed forests the south, the Mississippi lowland forests the southeastern bootheel, and the Southeast US conifer savannas reach the far south. The Ozarks are the anchor: an old, rocky, deeply dissected upland with a flora that reflects long isolation, including glades that behave like small prairies on limestone. A Missouri garden has three honest options depending on where it sits, prairie in the north and west, oak and hickory woodland through the middle, and glade planting on thin rocky ground in the south.
