State or province
Tennessee
Tennessee, United States of America: 5 ecoregions. Each with its climate now and toward 2050, and its conservation tier.
Landscape and climate
Five ecoregions reach Tennessee and the state crosses all of them west to east. The Mississippi lowland forests hold the western bottomland, the Southeast US conifer savannas reach the southwest, the Interior Plateau US Hardwood Forests cover the middle, and the east rises through the Appalachian mixed mesophytic forests into the Appalachian-Blue Ridge forests. Three are in the Nature Imperiled tier. Tennessee is long and narrow in exactly the direction that maximizes variety, so the state spans river bottomland and high southern Appalachian forest within one border. The eastern end carries the richer flora, including the mixed mesophytic forest where no single canopy species dominates and the understory is correspondingly deep.
