Maine

Maine, United States of America: 2 ecoregions. Each with its climate now and toward 2050, and its conservation tier.

Landscape and climate

Two ecoregions cover Maine, both temperate broadleaf and mixed forests and both in the Nature Imperiled tier. The Northeastern Hardwoods hold the interior and the north; the Northeastern Coastal Forests run along the shore. That tier ranking may read oddly for the most forested state in the country, and the distinction is worth keeping straight: the rank describes how much of the original ecosystem structure is intact and protected, not how many trees are standing. Maine is heavily wooded and heavily cut over. For a garden the coastal and interior split is the practical one, since the shoreline is milder and saltier and the interior is colder with a shorter season.
