Florida

Florida, United States of America: 4 ecoregions. Each with its climate now and toward 2050, and its conservation tier.

Landscape and climate

Four ecoregions reach Florida and they are unusually distinct from each other. The Southeast US conifer savannas cover the panhandle and the north, the Southeast US mixed woodlands and savannas the central peninsula, and both sit in the Nature Imperiled tier. South of them the Everglades flooded grasslands hold the interior, a flooded grassland and savanna system, and the Bahamian-Antillean mangroves fringe the southern coasts. The state therefore spans temperate pine country in the north and genuinely tropical conditions in the south, which is why Florida advice so often contradicts itself. The ecoregion you are in decides whether you are gardening with longleaf pine and wiregrass or with mangrove-edge and subtropical species.
