Common juniper (Juniperus communis) has the largest natural range of any woody plant on earth. Missouri Botanical Garden calls it "the most widespread conifer growing in the world today", and the WGSRPD range mapped in this record runs to 130 botanical countries: a circumboreal band right around North America, Europe and Asia that reaches inside the Arctic Circle, plus one stranded population in the Atlas Mountains of North Africa. Its second claim is in the drinks cabinet. The waxy blue-black "berries" are fleshy seed cones rather than fruit, and they are the botanical that makes gin gin - the spirit category is legally defined by juniper being the predominant flavour, in EU spirit-drink law and in the US standards of identity alike. The honest caveat is that none of that makes it a good bet in most American gardens. MBG records "superior tolerance for cold temperatures and superior intolerance for heat and humidity" and states plainly that it is not recommended for planting south of USDA Zone 6, and it also notes that species plants are rarely sold in commerce - what a garden centre stocks is cultivars. Settle the habit question before buying, too, because the same species is a 9-to-12-inch prostrate mat on an exposed ridge, a 5-to-15-foot multi-stemmed shrub through most of the US, and occasionally a 45-foot tree.

Balsam fir
Balsam fir (Abies balsamea) is THE Christmas tree of the northeast and, for most gardens, a tree to admire rather than plant. Missouri Botanical Garden is unambiguous about why: the species is native to cool climates and is not recommended for planting in the hot and humid summer conditions south of USDA Zone 5, it is generally intolerant of urban pollution, and MBG explicitly does not recommend it for its own St. Louis climate. Wikipedia puts the same limit the other way round - it wants a mean annual temperature near 40°F with consistent moisture, and low moisture combined with high temperature is what stops the range. This is a boreal tree. It runs from Labrador and Newfoundland west to Alberta and south to Minnesota, Wisconsin, New England and New York, then survives in the Appalachians only by climbing, hanging on at 2,500 to 5,000 feet as far south as Virginia and West Virginia. Where it does suit the climate it is superb: a narrow aromatic spire of 50 to 70 feet and only 15 to 25 feet wide, clothed in flat blunt needles 0.6 to 1.2 inches long, dark green above with two chalk-white stomatal bands beneath and twisted at the base so they lie in two horizontal ranks either side of the shoot. Two features are worth learning by hand. The young bark is smooth and grey and studded with RESIN BLISTERS that spray when punctured - no spruce or pine does that - and the erect cones, 2 to 3 inches and dark purple, ripen brown and DISINTEGRATE on the branch in September, dropping their scales and leaving a bare central spike standing on the twig. A fir cone is therefore something you almost never find whole on the ground, which is the single fastest way to tell Abies from Picea. That resin is also the reason this tree has a place in the history of optics: Canada balsam, the oleoresin tapped from those bark blisters, dries to a transparent mass with a refractive index near 1.52, effectively the same as crown glass, so it worked as an invisible glue for cementing lens elements and became the standard mounting medium for microscope slides from about 1830. It was phased out during the Second World War for polyester, epoxy and urethane adhesives, which do not yellow and have far better thermal and solvent resistance. The honest catch list is long: balsam woolly adelgid, spruce budworm (this is the budworm's preferred main host), bark beetles, spider mites in hot spells, cankers, heart rot, root rot, needle rust and twig blight, plus heavy deer browsing, shallow roots that make it wind-firm only in a stand, and a working life measured in decades rather than centuries.

Alberta-British Columbia foothills forests
The Alberta-British Columbia foothills forests form a transitional temperate conifer ecoregion straddling the boundary between the Rocky Mountains to the west and the Mid-Canada boreal plains to the east, lying mostly in Alberta with a portion in British Columbia. Mixed forests of lodgepole pine, quaking aspen, jack pine, and white spruce dominate, with balsam poplar, paper birch, and balsam fir also common, while wetter sites support black spruce and tamarack. The climate is subhumid and cold temperate, with short summers averaging 13-15C, cold winters from -17.5 to -10C, and annual precipitation of roughly 400-600 mm. Arizona Mountains forests
The Arizona Mountains forests - the sky-island and Mogollon Rim forest belt of central and eastern Arizona, southwestern New Mexico, and a thin strip in adjacent Mexico. Elevation banding from desert grassland and pinyon-juniper through ponderosa pine + Gambel oak, Douglas fir + aspen + white fir at higher elevations, and isolated subalpine spruce-fir on the highest peaks (Humphreys Peak, Mt. Baldy). The 'Madrean sky islands' on the southern edge connect biotic elements of the Sierra Madre Occidental with the Southwest US.

The Atlantic coastal pine barrens - the fire-dependent pitch pine + scrub oak ecosystem of the New Jersey Pinelands, Long Island Pine Barrens, Cape Cod, and smaller patches across coastal Massachusetts and adjacent Rhode Island / Connecticut / Delaware. British Columbia coastal conifer forests
The British Columbia Coastal Conifer Forests ecoregion spans the mainland Coast Mountains of British Columbia, just inland of the outer Pacific coast, across the Pacific and Kitimat Ranges to elevations near 4,000 meters. Conifers dominate, especially Douglas-fir and western hemlock communities alongside western red cedar, amabilis fir, and Alaskan yellow cedar in subalpine zones. The wet maritime climate brings annual precipitation from about 1,500 mm at lower elevations to 3,400 mm higher up, falling mostly in winter, with drier summers. Lowland forests are notably rich in epiphytes, fungi, amphibians, and invertebrates, and the Great Bear Rainforest here holds ancient stands representing a quarter of the world's coastal temperate rainforest.

Central British Columbia Mountain forests
The Central British Columbia Mountain forests stretch northwest-to-southeast across north-central British Columbia, east of the Coast Mountains, spanning ranges such as the Omineca, Skeena, Stikine, and Hart at elevations from 700 to 2,400 metres. Low slopes carry western red cedar, western hemlock, lodgepole pine, aspen, and spruce, grading into subalpine Engelmann spruce and fir and, on the highest ground, alpine tundra. The climate is subarctic, with a mean annual temperature near 2°C, summers around 12°C, and cold winters. The grizzly bear is the flagship species, but only about 6% of the ecoregion is protected, leaving it exposed to intensive logging.
