Connecticut

Connecticut, United States of America: 2 ecoregions. Each with its climate now and toward 2050, and its conservation tier.

Landscape and climate

Two ecoregions divide Connecticut, and both are in the Nature Imperiled tier. The Northeastern Coastal Forests cover the south and the shoreline; the Northeastern Hardwoods reach down into the cooler northwest hills. Both are temperate broadleaf and mixed forests, so the state reads as one broad forest type with a north-south gradient inside it rather than as two contrasting halves. That tier ranking is the part worth taking seriously: this is long-settled country where very little original forest structure survives. A garden here can do real work by leaning on the natives of an oak and hickory woodland, keeping canopy and understory layers rather than lawn, and letting the leaf litter stay where it falls.
