Sierra Madre Occidental pine-oak forests

A virtually stemless, broadleaf-evergreen native of central and eastern North America: a basal rosette of rigid, sword-shaped, spine-tipped leaves up to 30 inches long, fringed along the margins with the curly white threads that give the species its name. In early summer a flowering stalk shoots from the center to 5 to 8 feet, carrying nodding, bell-shaped, creamy-white flowers. Tough enough for poor sandy soil, heat, drought, and salt spray, it earns its keep as architectural structure in dry and seaside gardens.

A tall, summer-growing cormous perennial from across sub-Saharan Africa, grown for arching spikes of large, hooded, orange-to-red-and-yellow flowers in summer over fans of sword-shaped leaves. This is the widespread wild African gladiolus and a key ancestor of the big garden gladioli. Unlike the winter-growing Cape bulbs, it is a SUMMER-GROWING corm: plant in spring, grow and flower through summer, then it dies back to a dormant corm for winter. It wants full sun, well-drained soil, and summer moisture, and is one of the hardier species gladioli - surviving to about USDA zone 7 with a deep winter mulch or by lifting the corms in cold-winter areas. The corms are toxic and irritant if eaten and have been used in traditional medicine, never as food. In the wild the hooded flowers are pollinated by sunbirds and long-tongued insects.

A bold, clump-forming evergreen perennial from South Africa, grown for big rounded umbels of trumpet-shaped blue (or white) flowers held on tall bare stalks above arching, strap-shaped leaves in mid-to-late summer. It is widely sold as "lily of the Nile," but that is a misnomer - the plant is South African (the Cape provinces and KwaZulu-Natal), not from the Nile. Spectacular and easy in warm climates, this evergreen Agapanthus is frost-tender, so in cold-winter areas it is grown in a container and overwintered under cover. The RHS has given several Agapanthus praecox forms its Award of Garden Merit and rates this evergreen species half-hardy (H3 - needs winter protection).

A tall, bold warm-season annual from Mexico and Guatemala (the "African" name is a misnomer of its European garden history) grown for large, fully double, pompon-like flowerheads in saturated yellow, gold, and orange over strongly aromatic, finely divided foliage. Plants reach 1 to 4 feet and bloom from early summer to frost in full sun. The petals are edible and used as a culinary garnish and natural dye, and the flowers are the iconic "flor de muerto" of Mexican Day of the Dead. Despite the wide listed zone range it is frost-tender and grown for a single warm season.

Aji pepper is the South American chili species behind aji amarillo, Lemon Drop, Bishop's crown and Brazil's dedo-de-moça - one of the five domesticated chili peppers, and a different plant from the familiar garden pepper (Capsicum annuum) and the habanero (Capsicum chinense). It is a perennial shrub native from Colombia, Ecuador and Peru through Bolivia, Paraguay, Uruguay, northern Argentina and central and southern Brazil, and where it can live for years it grows taller than most garden peppers, up to about 6.6 feet. Its white to cream flowers are typically marked with green or gold, and its fruits, which usually hang down in cultivated forms, come in an unusually wide range of shapes, from long tapered pods to the crown-shaped Bishop's crown. Heat runs from nearly heatless types to hot ones; aji amarillo is rated around 30,000-50,000 Scoville units. It is frost tender, so outside nearly frost-free climates it is grown as a warm-weather annual.

A native eastern + central North American thicket-forming shrub producing arching thorny canes + clusters of large sweet black berries in mid-to-late summer. Among the most important wildlife fruit producers in eastern forests - birds, mammals, + insects all depend on the fruit. Like raspberry, biennial-caned (primocane year 1, fruits in year 2 as floricane, then dies back). Spreads via root suckers + tip-rooting cane tips; manage with annual pruning.

A native Southeastern North American semi-evergreen woodland groundcover (Pachysandra procumbens), prized for its blue-green to bronze mottled leaves and fragrant white-to-pinkish bottlebrush flower spikes that open at ground level in late winter to early spring. Unlike the widely planted invasive Asian Pachysandra terminalis, this native spreads slowly by rhizomes into well-behaved clumping colonies, making it a low, restrained groundcover for shaded native plantings.

Hippeastrum x hybridum is a complex garden hybrid derived from six or more wild Hippeastrum species native to tropical and subtropical South America, developed through intensive breeding since the late 18th century and now the dominant "amaryllis" sold worldwide as a holiday bulb. It produces spectacular trumpet-shaped flowers - 5 to 8 inches across - on stout leafless scapes in red, pink, white, orange, salmon, or bicolour, making it one of the most dramatic winter-flowering houseplants available. The honest catch is toxicity: the entire plant, especially the bulb, contains lycorine and related alkaloids at concentrations that cause vomiting, salivation, tremors, and hypotension in pets and children, so it must be placed out of reach and handled with care.

A medium-to-large native shade tree of central and eastern North America, reaching 50 to 80 feet with an ovate-rounded crown and large, asymmetric heart-shaped leaves. In June it carries pale-yellow, intensely fragrant flowers on pendulous cymes - each cluster hung from a distinctive strap-like leafy bract - that ripen into pea-sized nutlets. The fragrant June bloom is a premier nectar source: Missouri Botanical Garden lists it as attracting bees and butterflies, and the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center flags it as having special value to both native and honey bees.

American beautyberry (Callicarpa americana) is a loose, open, arching deciduous shrub of the southeastern and south-central United States, grown almost entirely for one spectacular autumn trick. Through summer it is a quiet green background plant, carrying small clusters of pink-to-lilac flowers tucked into the leaf axils. Then, from late summer into fall, those clusters ripen into tight whorls of vivid magenta-purple berries that wrap right around the stems at every leaf joint, so the arching branches look strung with beads. Songbirds strip them through fall and early winter. It is an easy, fast-growing, forgiving native that asks for little: full sun to part shade, ordinary well-drained soil, and room to arch. Site it where the fall berry show can be seen, because in leaf and flower it is plain, and in fruit it is one of the most distinctive shrubs you can grow.

Once the dominant canopy hardwood of the eastern United States forest - an estimated four billion trees, prized for fast growth, rot-resistant timber, and an enormous annual crop of sweet edible nuts that fed people, livestock, and wildlife alike. In the early 1900s an introduced Asian fungus, chestnut blight (Cryphonectria parasitica), swept through and functionally destroyed it: by the 1950s the species was effectively extinct as a mature forest tree. Surviving root systems still send up sprouts from old stumps, but the blight almost always girdles and kills them before they can grow large enough to flower and reproduce. The honest reality for a gardener is that you cannot reliably grow a mature wild-type American chestnut today. The realistic paths are blight-resistant backcross hybrids from The American Chestnut Foundation or transgenic blight-tolerant lines still being deployed - not a pure wild seedling, which the blight will almost certainly kill.

A fast, suckering native shrub of streambanks and moist thickets across eastern North America, grown for huge flat-topped cymes of tiny lemon-scented white flowers in early summer and the clusters of dark elderberry drupes that follow. Spreads by root suckers into naturalized colonies 5 to 12 feet tall and wide; the flowers feed butterflies and the showy fruit feeds birds. The raw berries are not eaten fresh - they are cooked into jelly, pie, and wine.

Paperbark maple is a small, slow-growing deciduous tree native to central China (Hubei, Sichuan, Gansu, and neighboring provinces), where it is now considered Endangered in the wild by the IUCN. In gardens it earns its keep on three fronts: cinnamon-orange bark that peels in papery curls year-round, brilliant scarlet-orange autumn foliage, and a compact scale (20 to 30 feet) that fits suburban lots. The honest catch is propagation scarcity - most seeds are parthenocarpic (empty), so named nursery stock is expensive and sometimes undersized for its price; patience is required both at the nursery counter and in the garden, as it grows at less than 12 inches per year.

Scots pine is the only pine native to northern Europe and one of the most widely distributed conifers in the world, ranging from Scotland and Spain across Eurasia to eastern Siberia and Mongolia. It is a long-lived, architectural tree prized for its distinctive orange-red upper bark, glaucous blue-green paired needles, and sculptural open crown that develops with age. In the garden it delivers year-round structure and strong wildlife value, but the honest catch is scale and mess: at full size it easily tops 60 to 80 feet, drips resin, sheds persistent acidic needle litter that suppresses ground-layer planting beneath it, and in parts of eastern North America and New Zealand it is listed as an invasive species that can spread into open habitats.

Dierama pulcherrimum, angel's fishing rod, is an arching, more-or-less evergreen cormous perennial in the iris family (Iridaceae), endemic to the open summer-rainfall grasslands of the Eastern Cape of South Africa. It forms grassy tufts of long, narrow leaves from which tall, wiry, arching flower stems rise to about 4.9 feet (occasionally to 5.9 feet), each hung with pendulous, bell-shaped rosy-pink to purple flowers in summer - the namesake "fishing rod" silhouette over a pond or in a gravel garden. It is the load-bearing caution to note that this is only a borderline-hardy plant: RHS rates it H4 (hardy to roughly 14 to 23°F / USDA ~8b-9), so in colder zones it needs a sheltered, sunny, sharply drained spot, a winter mulch, or container/glasshouse protection, and it resents disturbance once established. It is not recorded as toxic - though it is grown purely as an ornamental and is not a food plant, so treat it as inedible. It is well-behaved (Least Concern in the wild, no recorded weediness) and suits borders, pond margins, and containers in mild-temperate gardens.

Amaryllis belladonna, the belladonna lily (also Jersey lily, naked-lady, or March lily), is a bulbous perennial geophyte from the Western Cape of South Africa. It is grown for its dramatic autumn display: leafless stems carry umbels of 6-12 fragrant, funnel-shaped pink to rose flowers that appear before the strap-shaped leaves emerge (a hysteranthous "naked lady" habit). It suits the front-to-mid border, gravel and Mediterranean-style plantings, and large containers in a hot, sheltered, sun-baked spot. Be plain about two cautions: the bulb is only modestly frost-hardy (roughly USDA 8/9-11; RHS H4) and is best given the warmest, driest position available in cooler areas, and ALL parts of the plant are TOXIC, containing lycorine and related Amaryllidaceae alkaloids that cause vomiting and diarrhea if eaten by people or pets. It also naturalizes readily in mild Mediterranean climates, so site it where self-sown spread is welcome.

A tall, statuesque, winter-growing cormous perennial from the winter-rainfall fynbos of South Africa's Western Cape, grown for its bold fans of upright sword leaves and branched spikes of pink (to white) tubular flowers in late spring. Known as the Cape bugle-lily, it is a striking fynbos geophyte that flowers profusely the season after a fire. Honesty (load-bearing): it is a TALL plant, 4 to 6 feet in flower, and it is WINTER-GROWING and SUMMER-DORMANT - it grows through autumn and winter, flowers in late spring, then dies back and rests dry through summer, so you water it from autumn to spring and keep it dry and at rest in summer; watering it through a hot summer rots the corm. It is FROST-TENDER to borderline (RHS rates it about H3-H4): in cold-winter areas grow it in a warm, sheltered, sharply-drained spot or a large pot, or lift and store the dormant corms. It wants FULL SUN and well-drained soil and the room its height needs. In the wild it is FIRE-ADAPTED, flowering en masse the season after a fynbos fire. The corms are inedible. It is bird-pollinated, worked by sunbirds (and butterflies) along with long-tongued flies - described in the prose, since it is grown as an ornamental rather than for any crop.

The signature evergreen oak of the California coast and foothills - a broad-canopied tree with dense, dark, holly-like leaves whose spiny-toothed margins curl under, and a short, often massive trunk. The Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center documents it growing 20 to 50 feet high and wide, with old specimens reaching 100 feet and living for centuries. A keystone wildlife tree: its acorns and dense canopy feed and shelter Oak Titmouse, scrub and Steller's jays, chestnut-backed chickadee, and roughly 30 other bird species, and it is a larval host for three duskywing and sister butterflies.

A deciduous small tree or large shrub from subtropical southern South America, prized for dramatic arching sprays of waxy, deep-red pea-flowers across the warm season. POWO (Kew) and Flora e Funga do Brasil record it as native to southern Brazil, Uruguay, Paraguay and northern Argentina, where it is the national flower of both Argentina and Uruguay (the ceibo / corticeira). Tough and frost-hardy to the roots, it resprouts after a light freeze and tolerates wet ground. The seeds and bark contain toxic erythrina alkaloids, so no part should be eaten.

A tough, bushy evergreen fynbos shrub grown for its long-lasting coloured bracts: the slender leaves at the stem tips flush yellow, orange, and crimson around small woody cones, brightest through the cool season. POWO (Kew) gives its native range as the Cape Provinces of South Africa, where it is the most widespread and adaptable conebush, and it is the parent of the famous cut-flower hybrid "Safari Sunset". The honest catch carries through everything that follows: it is dioecious - male and female cones are borne on separate plants - and, like all Proteaceae, it is phosphorus-sensitive, so ordinary phosphate fertiliser and bone meal will kill it. It wants acidic, sharply drained soil and full sun, is drought-tolerant once established, and is frost-tender, though the hardiest and most forgiving of this fynbos group. Its small, scented heads are insect-pollinated (beetles, flies, and bees) in the wild - unlike the proteas, the conebushes are not bird-pollinated; it is grown ornamentally, not as a food crop.

Crimson bottlebrush (formerly Callistemon citrinus, and still sold and grown under that name almost everywhere) is a bold evergreen shrub native to New South Wales, Queensland, and Victoria in eastern Australia. From spring through fall - and nearly year-round in frost-free climates - it carries dense, cylindrical, crimson-red 'bottlebrush' flower spikes packed with long protruding stamens, held above narrow, lance-shaped leaves dotted with oil glands that release a distinct lemony citrus scent when bruised (the species epithet citrinus means 'related to citrus'). Left unpruned it can reach 10 to 15 feet tall and wide as a large shrub or small tree, but it is more commonly trained as a 3 to 5 feet shrub, and it tolerates hard pruning well, regenerating new growth from old wood. It wants full sun and does best in moist, fertile, well-drained soil, though it tolerates waterlogging and, once established, drought; it prefers acid soil, and its leaves can yellow in alkaline or salty ground. It is frost-tender: NC State puts its winter hardiness at only 20 to 25°F and says it needs winter protection in zone 8. USDA PLANTS lists no invasive or noxious status for it in the US, Plants For A Future gives it no weed potential, and NC State Extension lists it as non-toxic to cats, dogs, and horses - though it is grown as an ornamental, not a food crop.

Japanese pittosporum is a dense, evergreen shrub native to warm-temperate and subtropical coastal forests of Japan, China, Taiwan, and Korea, prized for its leathery whorled foliage and intensely fragrant white flower clusters in spring. In suitable climates (USDA zones 8b-11) it is exceptionally tough - tolerating salt spray, drought, compacted soils, and heavy pruning - making it a staple of coastal landscapes, hedges, and mass plantings. The honest catch is twofold: it is frost-tender and will be killed or severely damaged below about 15°F, ruling it out for most of the continental US interior; and in mild Mediterranean-climate regions it escapes cultivation from bird-dispersed sticky seeds, where a Madrid study ranked it among the shrubs most associated with damage to native vegetation.

A tough, EVERGREEN, rhizomatous iris relative from South Africa - native to the Cape Provinces and KwaZulu-Natal along the summer-rainfall eastern seaboard (POWO, Kew) - grown for fans of stiff, sword-shaped leaves and white, iris-like flowers marked with yellow and violet. Each flower lasts only a single day, but they are borne in repeated flushes over weeks, which earns the plant its nickname, the "fortnight lily." Unlike the dormant Cape bulbs it is grown alongside, this is an EVERGREEN rhizome with NO dormant season - a drought-tolerant, low-maintenance landscape workhorse for full sun or light shade that, once established, asks almost nothing and tolerates a wide range of soils. It is the HARDIEST of this Cape group (to about USDA zone 8b; the RHS rates it borderline-hardy, about H4) and is a reliable, low-care evergreen for warm-temperate and Mediterranean gardens. The wiry flower stems re-bloom, so leave them in place; tidy only the old leaves. It is bee- and insect-pollinated rather than bird-pollinated, and it is not a food plant.

Persian buttercup is a tuberous herbaceous perennial native to the eastern Mediterranean - from Cyprus, Crete, and Turkey across to Iran, Iraq, and the Levant - where it blooms in rocky scrub and meadows in late winter through spring. In gardens it is prized for its luminous, poppy-like flowers in red, orange, pink, yellow, and white (wild single forms) or the dense, multi-layered doubles of commercial 'Tecolote' and 'Bloomingdale' strains beloved by florists. The honest catch is its frost-tenderness: the tubers are killed below roughly 14°F, so gardeners in USDA zones 7 and colder must lift and store them after foliage dies down each summer, and the whole plant contains protoanemonin, a skin and gut irritant toxic to humans and livestock on contact or ingestion.

A small, dense, rounded evergreen citrus tree or shrub (8 to 15 feet) grown for its tiny oval-to-round orange fruits that are eaten whole, skin and all - the sweet, fragrant rind plays against the tart inner flesh, which is the whole point of the fruit. Among the cold-hardiest of the citrus relatives, it shrugs off brief cold better than most citrus (roughly to USDA zone 8b), yet it is still frost-tender and is widely grown in containers and greenhouses wherever winters turn cold. Native to southern China, not North America. Note the accepted botanical name is now Citrus japonica; Fortunella japonica is the widely-used synonym.

Tasmanian blue gum is a towering, very fast-growing evergreen tree from southeastern Australia (Tasmania and coastal Victoria) - one of the most widely planted eucalypts in the world, and one of the most widely regretted outside its native range. It reaches 90 to 150 feet or more, with a tall straight trunk, peeling ribbons of bark, and aromatic blue-green to gray-green foliage that carries the classic 'eucalyptus' scent. Honesty first, because it is load-bearing here: in California and other Mediterranean-climate regions this is an INVASIVE tree. It self-seeds aggressively, displaces native vegetation, and is allelopathic - its leaf litter and oils suppress the plants beneath it. Worse, it is a serious FIRE HAZARD: the oil-rich leaves, the long shedding bark ribbons, and the deep litter of dropped leaves and bark burn explosively, which is why these trees are nicknamed 'gasoline trees' and have fueled some of the most dangerous wildland fires. We strongly discourage planting Eucalyptus globulus near homes or in fire-prone, wildland-adjacent areas; plant a regionally-appropriate, fire-smart native tree instead. The aromatic foliage is the source of commercial eucalyptus oil, but that oil is TOXIC if ingested in any quantity and the foliage is not food - this is not an edible plant. It is also simply enormous and fast: not a tree for a small property.
