State or province
Nevada
Nevada, United States of America: 5 ecoregions. Each with its climate now and toward 2050, and its conservation tier.
Landscape and climate
Five ecoregions reach Nevada and three of them are desert. The Great Basin shrub steppe covers most of the state, with the Mojave desert in the south and the Snake-Columbia shrub steppe reaching the north. Against them sit two conifer systems, the Sierra Nevada forests on the western edge and the Great Basin montane forests on the interior ranges. That last pairing is what makes Nevada more interesting than its reputation: the state is a series of isolated mountain ranges rising out of dry basins, each carrying forest at the top. Elevation decides everything for a garden here. The basin floors are true high desert, cold in winter and very dry, and the plant list should reflect that rather than a generic warm-desert one.
