Georgia
Georgia, United States of America: 4 ecoregions. Each with its climate now and toward 2050, and its conservation tier.
Landscape and climate
Four ecoregions reach Georgia, and they stack from the coast to the mountains. The Southeast US conifer savannas cover the coastal plain across the bottom half of the state, a temperate grassland and savanna system in the Nature Imperiled tier. Above the fall line the Piedmont takes over, and the northern corner rises into the Appalachian-Blue Ridge forests and the Appalachian mixed mesophytic forests, both temperate broadleaf systems. The gardening consequence is a real north-south split. The coastal plain suits longleaf pine, wiregrass and the fire-adapted flora that goes with them, while the north Georgia mountains support a hardwood understory with a spring ephemeral season that the coastal plain never gets.
