Michigan

Michigan, United States of America: 3 ecoregions. Each with its climate now and toward 2050, and its conservation tier.

Landscape and climate

Three ecoregions cover Michigan and the divide runs roughly with the state itself. All three are temperate broadleaf and mixed forests. The Western Great Lakes forests hold the Upper Peninsula and the northern Lower, the Southern Great Lakes forests the southeast, and the Upper Midwest US forest-savanna transition the southwest. The Southern Great Lakes forests are in the Nature Imperiled tier. The lakes themselves are the practical variable the ecoregion names only imply: they moderate the shoreline enough that the fruit belt on the western side supports plants that fail a short distance inland. Northern Michigan gardens are working with a genuinely shorter season and should plan around it rather than around the state average.
