State or province
Alabama
Alabama, United States of America: 5 ecoregions. Each with its climate now and toward 2050, and its conservation tier.
Landscape and climate
Five ecoregions reach Alabama, and the split is between the coastal plain and the uplands. The Southeast US conifer savannas cover the south, the longleaf pine country that once ran unbroken to the Gulf and now sits in the Nature Imperiled tier. North and east of it the land rises into the Appalachian mixed mesophytic forests and the Appalachian-Blue Ridge forests, both temperate broadleaf systems, with the Piedmont between them and the Interior Plateau US Hardwood Forests to the northwest. For a garden that means two quite different palettes in one state: fire-adapted pine and grassland species on the sandy south, and a deep hardwood understory of trilliums, ferns and spring ephemerals in the north.
