Alaska
Alaska, United States of America: 16 ecoregions. Each with its climate now and toward 2050, and its conservation tier.
Landscape and climate
Sixteen ecoregions reach Alaska and none of them is temperate in the way the lower forty-eight would recognize. Nine are tundra, running from the Arctic coastal tundra and Arctic foothills tundra in the north through the Brooks-British Range tundra and the Beringia lowland and upland tundra to the Aleutian Islands tundra far out in the chain. Four more are boreal taiga, including the Interior Alaska-Yukon lowland taiga and the Cook Inlet taiga, and the Northern Pacific Alaskan coastal forests hold the wet southeast panhandle. Much of that roster is already in the Half Protected tier, which is rare at this scale. Gardening here is a short-season proposition almost everywhere, and the plants that work are the ones built for it.
