State or province
Louisiana
Louisiana, United States of America: 4 ecoregions. Each with its climate now and toward 2050, and its conservation tier.
Landscape and climate
Four ecoregions reach Louisiana and three of them are in the Nature Imperiled tier. The Southeast US conifer savannas cover much of the state, the Mississippi lowland forests follow the river and the delta, the Western Gulf coastal grasslands hold the southwest coast, and the Piney Woods reach the northwest. Water is the organizing fact across all four, and the roster reflects it: bottomland hardwood and flooded systems rather than upland forest. Gardens here are working with heavy soil, a high water table and real flood risk in much of the state, which narrows the plant list usefully. Bald cypress, tupelo, and the understory that tolerates wet feet are natives here in a way they are not one state north.
