Arkansas

Arkansas, United States of America: 5 ecoregions. Each with its climate now and toward 2050, and its conservation tier.

Landscape and climate

Five ecoregions meet in Arkansas, which is why the state feels like several places at once. The Ozark Highlands mixed forests and Ozark Mountain forests cover the north and west, both temperate broadleaf systems in the Nature Could Recover tier. The Mississippi lowland forests run down the eastern edge along the river, the Southeast US conifer savannas reach the south, and the Piney Woods come in from the southwest. The practical divide is wet bottomland against dry upland: the delta side suits bald cypress, oaks and anything that tolerates heavy soil and periodic flooding, while the Ozark side is rockier and better drained, and rewards plants suited to thin soil over limestone.
