Massachusetts
Massachusetts, United States of America: 3 ecoregions. Each with its climate now and toward 2050, and its conservation tier.
Landscape and climate
Three ecoregions cover Massachusetts. The Northeastern Coastal Forests hold the east and the shore, the Northeastern Hardwoods the western hills, and the Atlantic coastal pine barrens cover the Cape and the islands. The first two are in the Nature Imperiled tier. The pine barrens are the distinctive one: a temperate conifer system on deep sand, fire-adapted, and home to a set of plants that will not grow in the richer soil twenty miles inland. A garden on the Cape and a garden in the Berkshires are genuinely different projects, and treating them as one Massachusetts plant list is the usual mistake here.
