Delaware

Delaware, United States of America: 2 ecoregions. Each with its climate now and toward 2050, and its conservation tier.

Landscape and climate

Two ecoregions share Delaware, and both are in the Nature Imperiled tier. The Mid-Atlantic US coastal savannas cover the south of the state, and the Northeastern Coastal Forests the north. The boundary between them is roughly the line gardeners here already feel, between the sandy, flat, wetter lower counties and the firmer ground above the canal. Coastal savanna species handle salt wind, sand and a high water table; the northern forest palette is the familiar oak and hickory understory. Both rankings say the same thing about what is left of the original cover, which makes a planted yard here worth more ecologically than its size suggests.
