State or province
North Carolina
North Carolina, United States of America: 4 ecoregions. Each with its climate now and toward 2050, and its conservation tier.
Landscape and climate
Four ecoregions reach North Carolina, arranged in the three bands the state is usually described by. The Southeast US conifer savannas and Mid-Atlantic US coastal savannas cover the coastal plain, both in the Nature Imperiled tier. The Piedmont holds the middle. The Appalachian-Blue Ridge forests cover the mountains in the west. That western band is one of the richest temperate forest areas in North America for plant diversity, with a spring ephemeral season and a salamander and fern flora to match. The practical result is a state where the same species list genuinely does not work end to end. Coastal plain gardens want fire-adapted pine savanna natives; mountain gardens want the cove hardwood understory.
