State or province
Ohio
Ohio, United States of America: 4 ecoregions. Each with its climate now and toward 2050, and its conservation tier.
Landscape and climate
Four ecoregions cover Ohio, all temperate broadleaf and mixed forests, and two are in the Nature Imperiled tier. The Southern Great Lakes forests hold the northwest, the Eastern Great Lakes lowland forests the northeast, the Appalachian mixed mesophytic forests the unglaciated southeast, and the Interior Plateau US Hardwood Forests the southwest. The glacial boundary is the line that matters and it runs diagonally across the state. North and west of it the land is flat with heavy soil; southeast of it it is hilly, never glaciated, and carries the richest forest flora in the state. A garden in the southeast hills has a deeper native species list to draw on than one in the northwest flats.
