Mississippi

Mississippi, United States of America: 2 ecoregions. Each with its climate now and toward 2050, and its conservation tier.

Landscape and climate

Two ecoregions cover Mississippi and both are in the Nature Imperiled tier. The Southeast US conifer savannas hold most of the state, and the Mississippi lowland forests run up the western side along the river. The division is simple and useful: bottomland on the delta side, pine savanna uplands everywhere else. The delta soil is deep, heavy and periodically flooded, which suits oaks, bald cypress and a wet-tolerant understory. The savanna country is sandier and was shaped by regular fire, so longleaf pine, wiregrass and the flowering understory that depends on an open canopy are the natives there. Both rankings say most of the original structure is gone, which makes either planting worth doing.
