California

California, United States of America: 15 ecoregions. Each with its climate now and toward 2050, and its conservation tier.

Landscape and climate

Fifteen ecoregions reach California and they cover four different biomes. That is more than almost any other state. Four are Mediterranean systems, including the California coastal sage and chaparral and the California interior chaparral and woodlands. Six are temperate conifer forests, from the Sierra Nevada forests and Klamath-Siskiyou forests to the Northern California coastal forests. Four are desert, including the Mojave desert and Sonoran desert, and the California Central Valley grasslands hold the middle. Several of those sit in the Nature Imperiled tier, the Central Valley grasslands and the coastal sage and chaparral among them. The useful consequence is that no single California plant list exists. What thrives on the fog-cooled coast will not survive an interior summer an hour inland.
