State or province

Vermont

Vermont, United States of America: 3 ecoregions. Each with its climate now and toward 2050, and its conservation tier.

Landscape and climate

Three ecoregions cover Vermont and all three are in the Nature Imperiled tier. They are temperate broadleaf and mixed forests. The Northeastern Hardwoods hold the Green Mountains and most of the state, the Eastern Great Lakes lowland forests the Champlain valley in the northwest, and the Northeastern Coastal Forests reach the southeast corner. The Champlain valley is the notable exception to the general rule here: it is lower, warmer and has better soil than the mountains around it, which is why the state agriculture concentrates there. For a garden the choice is between a northern hardwood model, sugar maple and beech with a rich spring understory, and a milder valley planting with a meaningfully longer season.
