State or province
South Carolina
South Carolina, United States of America: 4 ecoregions. Each with its climate now and toward 2050, and its conservation tier.
Landscape and climate
Four ecoregions reach South Carolina in the familiar coast-to-mountain bands. The Southeast US conifer savannas and Mid-Atlantic US coastal savannas cover the lowcountry and the coastal plain, both in the Nature Imperiled tier. The Piedmont holds the midlands, and the Appalachian-Blue Ridge forests reach the upstate corner. The coastal plain is the larger share of the state and the one with the most distinctive flora, the longleaf pine and wiregrass system that depended on frequent low fire and is now among the most reduced habitat types in North America. A lowcountry garden leaning on those natives is working with the original cover; an upstate one is in hardwood forest country instead.
