State or province
New Hampshire
New Hampshire, United States of America: 2 ecoregions. Each with its climate now and toward 2050, and its conservation tier.
Landscape and climate
Two ecoregions cover New Hampshire, both in the Nature Imperiled tier. Both are temperate broadleaf and mixed forests. The Northeastern Hardwoods hold the interior and the White Mountains; the Northeastern Coastal Forests cover the short southeastern seacoast. The state is small enough that the interesting variable is vertical rather than horizontal. Elevation in the mountains compresses the growing season sharply over a short distance, so a garden in a notch and one in the Merrimack valley are working with quite different frost dates. The native palette is the northern hardwood set, sugar maple, beech and yellow birch with the spring ephemeral understory that goes under them, and it holds up well as a planting model across the state.
