State or province
Nova Scotia
Nova Scotia, Canada: 2 ecoregions. Each with its climate now and toward 2050, and its conservation tier.
Landscape and climate
Two ecoregions cover Nova Scotia, both temperate broadleaf and mixed forests. The Northeastern Hardwoods hold the interior uplands and are in the Nature Imperiled tier; the Gulf of St. Lawrence lowland forests cover the lower ground and the northern shore. This is Acadian forest, the conifer and hardwood mix that sits between the boreal forest and the eastern deciduous forest and belongs fully to neither. The province is narrow enough that the sea reaches everywhere, which moderates the winter and cools the summer compared with the mainland interior at the same latitude. Salt wind is the constant on the coast, and the native shrub layer handles it better than most ornamental hedging.
