Entrada em nível de gênero para as abelhas-cortadeiras-de-folhas solitárias, assim chamadas pela forma como as fêmeas recortam pedaços semicirculares lisos de folhas e pétalas para revestir e selar suas células de cria. São nidificadoras de cavidades, usando caules ocos, galerias de besouros em madeira morta e túneis semelhantes do tamanho de um lápis, o que as torna usuárias prontas do habitat de caules e dos hotéis de abelhas. Como forrageadoras em grande parte poliléticas (generalistas), elas carregam o pólen em uma densa escova de pelos na face inferior do abdômen, e não nas pernas, e são polinizadoras produtivas de leguminosas e compostas de verão no jardim. Os entalhes em forma de meia-lua que deixam nas folhas de roseira, olaia (Cercis canadensis), freixo e lilás são danos cosméticos à planta, não um problema de saúde.
Conservação
Não há listagem formal para o gênero inteiro, e muitas das cerca de 240 espécies de abelhas-cortadeiras-de-folhas nativas da América do Norte não são avaliadas individualmente. Uma análise de conservação da NatureServe constatou que uma parcela substancial das espécies nativas norte-americanas de Megachile pode enfrentar preocupação de conservação, enquanto a amplamente manejada abelha-cortadeira-da-alfafa (Megachile rotundata) é uma espécie eurasiática introduzida e não é considerada ameaçada. Trate o gênero como uma mistura de espécies seguras, com dados insuficientes e em risco, em vez de atribuir um único status.
