Prince Edward Island
Prince Edward Island, Canada: one ecoregion. Each with its climate now and toward 2050, and its conservation tier.
Landscape and climate
One ecoregion covers Prince Edward Island: the Gulf of St. Lawrence lowland forests. It is a temperate broadleaf and mixed forest system in the Nature Could Reach Half Protected tier. A single-ecoregion province makes the planting question unusually clear. This is Acadian forest on the low, red sandstone ground of the gulf, a conifer and hardwood mix rather than a pure deciduous forest, and the island has been more thoroughly cleared for agriculture than almost anywhere else in Atlantic Canada. The sea surrounds everything, which moderates the winter and keeps the summer cooler than the latitude implies, and salt wind reaches most of the island. Native shrubs and the Acadian mix handle both better than imported hedging.
