State or province
Saskatchewan
Saskatchewan, Canada: 5 ecoregions. Each with its climate now and toward 2050, and its conservation tier.
Landscape and climate
Five ecoregions reach Saskatchewan and they run in bands from prairie to shield. The Northern Shortgrass prairie covers the dry south, the Canadian Aspen forests and parklands the belt above it, and the Mid-Canada Boreal Plains forests, Midwest Canadian Shield forests and Northern Canadian Shield taiga the forested north. The aspen parkland is in the Nature Imperiled tier and is where most of the province lives and grows food. Saskatchewan is dry, windy and has a genuinely short season with late and early frosts, which narrows the plant list more than the summer heat suggests it should. Prairie natives with deep root systems handle the drought and the swings better than most of the alternatives.
