Southern Rift Montane forest-grassland
Southern Rift Montane forest-grassland
The Southern Rift montane forest-grassland mosaic drapes the high mountains and plateaus around the northern and western shores of Lake Malawi, spanning Malawi, Mozambique, Tanzania, and Zambia across landmarks such as the Nyika Plateau, the Kipengere and Poroto ranges, and the Viphya Mountains. It is a mosaic of montane grassland, dotted with grasses like Loudetia simplex, Themeda triandra, and Andropogon, interspersed with patches of Afromontane evergreen forest holding trees such as Syzygium guineense and Bersama abyssinica. The climate is a tropical highland one, cooler and more humid than the surrounding lowlands, with rainfall largely confined to a November-to-April wet season fed by convectional storms rising off the lake. The Nyika Plateau supports south-central Africa's richest orchid flora, totaling 214 species including 33 endemics, while the region also harbors six endemic species of Protea and serves as a stronghold for the blue swallow. Many of those orchids and proteas are themselves prized as ornamental and horticultural plants.

Use this as the broad planting pattern for the region: High-elevation grasslands, meadows, and shrublands above the treeline or in mountain basins, including alpine and páramo systems. Cool temperatures, intense sunlight, and specialized, often endemic flora characterize them. For garden decisions, pair that context with the plant list below, then narrow by your site's light, water, soil, and mature-size constraints.

Planting collections
Finished planting recipes where every member can handle this region's climate range. The fit badge uses the collection's most sensitive plant, so a resilient collection is a safer starting point than any single standout.
Starter kits for this region
Generated from catalog plants that already pass this region's climate fit gate, with native matches sorted first when the catalog has enough coverage.
