Tanzania

Tanzania: 17 ecoregions. Each with its climate now and toward 2050, and its conservation tier.

Landscape and climate

Seventeen ecoregions meet in Tanzania, and the mix explains the country's range. Miombo woodland dominates by area, both the Central Zambezian wet miombo and the dry miombo woodlands, with Acacia-Commiphora bushlands and the Serengeti volcanic grasslands in the north. Around the mountains sit some of Africa's most distinctive forests: the Eastern Arc forests, East African montane forests, and a sliver of the Albertine Rift, topped by East African montane moorlands. The coast carries Swahili coastal forests and East African mangroves, while the Zambezian flooded grasslands and halophytic pans fill low basins. Practically, this is seasonal tropical savanna country with wetter, cooler pockets at elevation and on the coast: plants need to handle a pronounced dry season in most of the country, while the montane zones favor moisture-loving highland species.
