The Puerto Rican moist forests cover the northern three-quarters of Puerto Rico along with adjacent islands such as Mona, Vieques, Culebra, Desecheo, and Caja de Muertos, forming part of the Caribbean Islands of the Neotropics. Vegetation shifts with elevation: lowland coastal forests carry trees like Hymenaea courbaril, the coroso palm (Acrocomia media), Nectandra coriacea, and Zanthoxylum martinicense, while the montane slopes of the Sierra de Luquillo and Cordillera Central hold the tree fern Cyathea arborea, the palm Prestoea acuminata, Cecropia peltata, and Ocotea, grading into cloud forest with Weinmannia pinnata and Podocarpus coriaceus. The climate is warm and wet year-round, averaging about 26 degrees C, which sustains dense broadleaf cover but also exposes the forest to hurricane damage and erosion on steep ground. The region is a stronghold of endemism, home to the critically endangered Puerto Rican amazon (Amazona vittata), the only native parrot of the archipelago, and numerous coqui frogs (Eleutherodactylus spp.), yet only about 5 percent of it is protected within reserves such as El Yunque National Forest and Maricao State Forest. Gardeners in suitably humid, frost-free settings may recognize native ornamentals from these forests, including the tree fern Cyathea arborea and the understory palm Prestoea acuminata.
