Newfoundland and Labrador
Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada: 3 ecoregions. Each with its climate now and toward 2050, and its conservation tier.
Landscape and climate
Three ecoregions cover Newfoundland and Labrador, and the province is really two places. The island and southern Labrador fall in the Eastern Canadian forests, a boreal system, with the Eastern Canadian Shield taiga covering the Labrador interior. The Torngat Mountain tundra holds the far north. None is in the Nature Imperiled tier. Growing conditions here are shaped less by latitude than by the ocean, which keeps the island cool and damp through the summer and moderates the winter more than the map suggests. The season is short and the wind is constant near the coast, so low, tough, salt-tolerant natives do far better than anything that needs sustained warmth to set fruit.
