Lady Banks' rose
Rosa banksiae
A huge, nearly thornless climbing rose from central and western China, grown for great sprays of small white or pale yellow flowers that open in spring, earlier than almost any other rose. It is a warm-climate rose: NC State Extension lists it for zones 6 to 10 but says it keeps its leaves only in zones 8 to 10, and the RHS says it does best on a warm, sheltered wall and is liable to frost damage elsewhere. It is also big. NC State says it can reach upwards of 40 feet, so it needs a strong support and plenty of room. The flowers come on stems two or three years old, so hard pruning every year costs the next spring's bloom.
