A tough, medium-sized native tree of the eastern and midwestern United States, grown as much for its showy edible orange fruit as for its distinctive thick, dark gray bark broken into rectangular blocks. Small urn-shaped white-to-greenish-yellow flowers open in May and June, and the sweet fruit ripens after frost. Largely dioecious - a female tree needs a male pollinizer nearby to set fruit - and notably drought- and walnut-tolerant once established.

Broad-crowned small to medium evergreen tree with a short trunk and rounded, spreading canopy. Large (up to 12 inches / 12 in) corrugated, dark-green glossy leaves are held year-round, giving dense shade beneath. New growth emerges bronze-felted. Flowers appear in terminal panicles in autumn and early winter; orange-yellow fruits ripen in tight clusters the following spring.

Grow against a warm south- or west-facing wall in zone 8 and cooler - the masonry buffers frost and the flower buds, which open in autumn and winter, need protection from temperatures below about 27°F to set fruit.

Plant in well-drained soil; loquat tolerates drought once established but resents waterlogged roots, particularly in winter when cold wet conditions combine to rot the crown.

Remove fallen fruit promptly beneath the canopy - ripe loquats drop and ferment quickly, creating a slippery, wasp-attracting mess on paving and attracting rodents if left to accumulate.

Plant in spring after frost risk has passed in a sheltered, sunny spot with well-drained soil. In zone 8 and cooler, a south- or west-facing wall provides crucial frost protection for the flower buds.

Transplanting

Young container-grown specimens transplant readily in spring. Established trees resent root disturbance; site carefully from the outset as moving a mature loquat is rarely successful.

Early growth

Growth is moderately fast when young - 12 to 24 inches per year in warm climates - slowing as the tree matures. The characteristic large, deeply veined leaves appear from the first season.

Maturity

Reaches flowering size in 3-5 years from a container-grown plant. Full fruit crops develop once the canopy fills out, typically by years 5-8. Trees in mild climates can live for many decades.

Seed germinates readily but produces variable offspring; named cultivars are grafted onto seedling rootstocks. Semi-ripe cuttings taken in summer root under mist with bottom heat.
