Les ouvrières de la myrmécochorie dans les forêts décidues de l'Est. Beaucoup de fleurs printanières dotent chaque graine d'un appendice gras appelé élaïosome ; ces fourmis rapportent la graine au nid, donnent l'appendice à leurs larves et rejettent la graine intacte dans une chambre riche en nutriments. La plante voit ainsi sa graine enfouie, éloignée du pied mère et hors de portée des rongeurs.

Il s'agit d'une entrée de groupe au niveau du genre : les espèces disséminatrices de l'Est forment le complexe Aphaenogaster rudis, qui comprend A. rudis, A. picea et A. fulva, difficiles à distinguer sur le terrain et traitées ici ensemble.
