Il met en cache glands et graines de conifères dans le sol et dans l'écorce sans tout récupérer, si bien que les caches oubliées finissent par planter des arbres ; le même oiseau est un imitateur accompli et un charognard sans gêne partout où l'on laisse de la nourriture.

Sédentaire dans les forêts de conifères et les forêts mixtes de conifères et de chênes, du sud de l'Alaska le long de la côte pacifique et à travers les montagnes intérieures de l'ouest de l'Amérique du Nord jusqu'au Mexique et à l'Amérique centrale. La couleur de la tête varie géographiquement : les oiseaux côtiers l'ont brun-noir, ceux de l'intérieur sont plus bleus, avec des stries blanches au-dessus de l'œil.
