Petite sittelle au ventre roux, propre aux épinettes, sapins, pruches et pins, et la plus septentrionale de sa famille en Amérique du Nord. Elle creuse elle-même sa cavité dans du bois mort tendre, puis enduit l'entrée de résine collante de conifère et plonge proprement par le milieu du trou pour éviter sa propre défense. Les années où la récolte de cônes du Nord échoue, elle déserte complètement la ceinture de conifères et apparaît très au sud de son aire habituelle.

Son aire d'hivernage est instable par nature : les mauvaises années à cônes, les oiseaux irrompent bien au sud de la forêt de nidification.
