Grand papillon de soie indigène dont la chenille spectaculaire est le hickory horned devil. Les larves consomment noyer, caryer, pacanier, liquidambar, plaqueminier et autres feuillus de l'Est, puis se nymphosent dans le sol. Les adultes ne se nourrissent pas; le vrai soutien vient donc des arbres hôtes matures et d'un sol peu perturbé dessous.
